The confusion often stems from how players first encounter dungeon crawlers. Let me share a bit of my personal journey to illustrate this.

My first taste of a dungeon crawler was back in 1988 when I played Phantasy Star on the Sega Master System. This JRPG seamlessly blended classic fantasy elements with modern and futuristic touches. I could choose to wield a traditional weapon like a Laconian Axe (akin to adamantine) or a high-tech Laser Pistol. Exploring the same dungeon, I would encounter both a classic monster like a Lizardman and an advanced robot.

In 1991, two years after its release, I discovered HeroQuest. From the moment I started playing, I was hooked. The game’s immersive dungeon exploration and cooperative gameplay ignited my passion for the genre.

This love affair led me to explore numerous other dungeon crawlers across both tabletop and video games, including Final Fantasy VI (with its unforgettable antagonist, Kefka), Chrono Trigger, Shining Force, and Diablo. My adventures also led me to Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, and I still enjoy playing D&D today.

Tanares is a world that shares as much beauty as it conceals dangers. It’s the home of unique landscapes, powerful beings, deadly creatures, disasters, heroic actions, and mysteries. 

The Arcana War ended just as the Scriptures prescribed: all armies in the world perished at the doorstep of the most powerful kingdom in history, which followed the same path — swallowed by a massive fissure in the earth, mirrored by an equally frightening opening in the sky, in a region now called the Wasteland.

This power vacuum was quickly filled by a mighty survivor of the war whose identity is unknown. In collusion with the Church (who wanted no more deviation from the peaceful path determined by the Gods) and the nobles (who did not want to lose their status to vanish alongside their now extinct private armies), this “Faceless Emperor” picked up the pieces of the fragile world and now holds them with an iron hand.

In this way, Tanares has been through a fragile period of peace. But that doesn’t mean the land is free of strife. Nations, cities, and species hold grudges and conflicting interests as they compete for the same resources.

It was in this context that the Empire created the Arena, a place where such conflicts could be resolved through violent contests while keeping the loss of life to a minimum. These Arenas quickly rose to become the epicenters of politics, culture, and entertainment. Single battles became as important as full-fledged wars because they could decide the destiny of an entire nation and its people. And thus the combatants became as important as whole armies. As a result, only the strongest, fiercest, or most well-paid warriors battle in the Arenas. These unique fighters are, deservedly so, called Heroes. 

How long can this delicate balance of power be sustained? This question is especially important now that the territory known as the Wasteland — created in the wake of the biggest war in history, and long thought to be uninhabitable, saturated with toxic gas and dark energy — seems to be somehow expanding.

The Empire hires a team of some of the best Heroes in the land for a secret mission, but what they discover — and the mysterious lurking threat behind it — might change Tanares forever, bringing everything they know to an end.

The deeply developed lore of Arena: The Contest takes you to the center of this story. The Heroes who put an end to both the Eternal Storm and the Wasteland are again in an Arena. This time, though, they have come not to fight, but to be honored. It´s the inauguration of the Arena of Future, the biggest ever — the Empire’s effort to spread its influence to the other side of the continent.

The Heroes who saved the world from the last crisis were invited as guests of honor. The crowd cheers and yells as the Heroes approach the center stage to greet the hundreds of thousands filling the seats.

The clean, smooth battleground, without a single mar or bloodstain, is an odd sight. Strategically located and built on high ground, the Arena’s western section has a gorgeous opening through which attendants can see everything ahead and below, from the neighboring hills to the western ocean, where the sunset can be seen for the first time in centuries.

Suddenly, the ovation gives way to noisy screams and terrified eyes. The celebration is over. The crowd starts to get out of control. 

Ships on the horizon. Dozens and dozens of them, coming from the West, and berthing. The noises get deafening as one thing is certain: these ships are not Tanarian. There is something besides and beyond the Empire.

Now, not only many of the world´s best fighters, but even the Emperor himself, are missing — presumed dead. The Empire is at war but without its army or leader.

Is there an unknown civilization beyond the vast western ocean? Could the bloodshed caused by this invasion trigger another Malrokian Curse? Why are these invaders not on a peaceful mission, and why are some Tanarians suddenly in favor of them? And as players worry about these questions, will the gigantic Titan that swiftly emerged from the turbulent sea appear again?

Since you won´t be able to simply charge at the overwhelming enemy forces, you must craft a complex plan that requires the participation of two teams and prepare its many parts, adapting to the surprises that await you along the way.

With a lengthier and more developed story — and a way to read it quickly — Tanares Adventures uses this unique, rich universe to bring a much deeper story to the table, with thousands of decisions to make and hundreds of Quests to unveil and play.

The much-awaited sequel to the hit Arena: The Contest, Tanares Adventures is a massive semi-open world expansion for the first game that includes more than 200 hours of gaming content, more than 100 Quests, and new game systems and mechanics that increase the possibilities even further, in both Cooperative and Competitive matches. The new AI System feature allows a cooperative or solo playthrough controlling as few Heroes as you want — even just one — as it can determine the actions of the rest of your team — or the opposing team , if you’re willing to venture into a “solo PvP Deathmatch.”

The Cooperative Epic Campaign is more open than ever. You can choose where you go next as you explore many possible branches full of tough decisions. The choices you make along the way will affect what you experience later in the campaign in a lot of surprising ways, not only in the story but also in gameplay aspects of the Quest on the board. 

Divide eight Heroes into two teams, controlled by one to eight players on the same Campaign, and follow them as they travel their separate journeys and reunite for the final mission. Pick where you want to go next on the Adventure Map, or consult the Story Log for incomplete regions you have discovered, as you will have many options at your disposal and different reasons to visit each location rather than following a simple linear path.

The Level UP customization system has been refined and strongly revamped, with Extra Attack Cards, one Skill Tree for each combat role, and other new features, like the City Structures, through which you develop different aspects of your party’s progression. With new ways to spend your resources and a wider action selection on the board, even more synergistic combos and strategies are brought to the table.

Sidequests are self-contained stories (with a beginning and an end) that may relate to the Main Story of the campaign, in the form of extra information and Facts that can modify the Main Quests’ gameplay. Tanares Adventures packs more than 100 unique Quests, including four alternate beginnings. Heroes that do not make it to your Epic Campaign team can become allies that you send — and control — in Sidequests. Even former special huge Bosses from the original campaign have their own content and related Sidequests, giving you a complete sense of story immersion.

Board Tiles and Room Tiles change and expand the Battlegrid. As your party explores them in special events, you can open secret passages, hunt for treasure, find an underground level. With maps that you build as you go and all spoilers hidden in the Journal so you don’t see them while you set the quest up, intensify the dungeon-crawling vibe and play a tense game where you’re not sure what lies ahead.

Every bit of story that can be skipped or might happen in different ways through the interactive narrative developed in the Journal, a new companion gamebook with numbered paragraphs that reveal the alternatives to choose from and how the decisions you make impact your campaign. Organize your progress in your Team Sheet and Story Log, allowing you and your party to keep track of your status and events that have happened so far, keeping the gameplay streamlined even with this much new content.

We thus returned to our roots and decided to launch a complete supplement for the 5th Edition of the world’s greatest roleplaying game, and now we are calling everyone to write their very own story in this fascinating universe.

Containing three books with rules, adventures, and characters, all developed with a team of experienced hired professionals and featuring highly detailed maps, artwork, classes, feats, monsters, and miniatures, among other exclusive utilities, we believe we have the perfect material for those who have the desire to venture straight into a high-class RPG Adventure with quality material.

Knowing the issues this system can entail, we used all our accumulated experience on developing competitive board games and took great care to maintain balance in the elements. That includes four – truly original – new classes, four original races, a solo mode – dismissing the need for a Master even -, and hundreds of spells, feats, items, backgrounds, and unique illustrations. All that, always bearing in mind their potential for fun, adding diversity and quality to all of your adventures, either in Tanares or in any other scenario that you are currently playing.

In a world with only one Army, which exists to enforce an imperial decree that prohibits the gathering of large armed groups, the Adventurer Team has an even greater relevance in helping the People and making structural changes in the world. To highlight this fundamental aspect of the scenario, we are putting the spotlight on Team Creation as much as on PC creation, with several interesting rewards that change and upgrade according to your Team’s prestige, fame, and reputation in its field of work, alongside a simple system to improve the experience of Heroes fighting other Heroes in the Arena.

But for those who already know our past history and would like to focus exclusively on the board game universe, we have prepared things with you in mind. Some of the content will be adjusted to games you already own, like the Tanares Adventures version of the heroes from the four iconic classes in the book, as well as miniatures of villains and NPCs that appear in Arena: the Contest and Tanares Adventures, and much more.

We are also proud to highlight our community’s most requested piece. : The impressive Gold Dragon, Isendden, will join its Avatar Dragon peers (from Dragon Collection) in its majestic debut. A central character in the RPG’s Adventure, this magnificent being is ready to make his glorious, fearsome presence felt in tabletop board games as well.
